Run For the Cheetah Events - Portland, Oregon

This coming weekend, I'll be attending some great events for the Cheetah Conservation Fund in Portland, Oregon. Dr. Laurie Marker will be giving a cheetah talk at REI in the Pearl District on Saturday, October 14th. As of yesterday, there were only 20 tickets left for this event. Call REI at (503) 221-1938 to order your tickets. If you are lucky enough to get in for the talk, stop by my table and I'll give you a "I love animals!" sticker.

I will also be at the Oregon Zoo on Sunday, October 15th for the Run for the Cheetah. Visit runforthecheetah.org for more information. Hope to see you there!

GOATBOY PREDICTS THE FINAL FOUR...

Number three and number four are a toss-up between Paris Bennett and Kellie Pickler. Both are extremely talented, however, Kellie won't be able to overcome the "Carrie Underwood factor," and Paris is still young and needs to further define her genre.

Both of these cats will go on to have successful careers involving music, and Paris will probably have a career in medicine, too.

Number two will be Katharine McPhee. Katharine has the "IT" factor and typically shines on stage. Goatboy sees her doing Broadway shows and movies.

And the winner of American Idol will be Chris Doughtry! Chris has the biggest "IT" factor in this talented group. Just look at those eyes, the intensity, the passion. Goatboy says that Chris is a real cool cat and sees him rocking stadiums from coast to coast.

THE ANATOMY OF A POST
From where do ideas come?

When I photographed these two cats, I was instantly reminded of the poster for Brokeback Mountain.The first thing that I did was remove the background using the magic eraser in Photoshop. Next, using the lasso tool, I carefully traced around the edges of the black cat and flipped him horizontally so that he would face away from the other cat. Flipping the black cat, however, presented a new problem because part of his back was now missing in this orientation. So using the clone stamp tool, I cloned the rest of his back by targeting similar parts of his body. When the clone stamp tool left a poor transition, I blended the new with the old using the smudge tool.

Then I added the cowboy hats that I shot to match the correct orientation of the cats. Using the lasso tool again, I traced around the black cat's ear. Then I place the hat on his head and pasted the ear in front of it.

Next I used the gaussian blur filter to put a soft focus on the photo that I took of Mount Rainer, pasted the cats over it and added the dialog bubbles.

Finally, I turned the Photoshop file into a jpeg and used the smudge tool along the edges of the cats and their hats to make them as seamless as possible.
